Ramp Up Your Entryway: Accessible Front Door & Hallway Upgrades

Getting into your own home shouldn't be the hardest part of your day. Yet for anyone using a wheelchair, walker, or cane, the entryway is often the first, and most frustrating, barrier a home presents. A single step, a too-narrow door, or a dark porch can turn a simple homecoming into a safety risk.

The fix doesn't have to mean a full construction project. Portable and semi-permanent ramps have come a long way, with lightweight aluminum and modular designs that can be installed in an afternoon. A portable threshold ramp is a great starting point for single-step entries, while a modular aluminum ramp system works well for longer runs or porches.

Once you're through the door, hallways matter just as much. Standard doorways are often too narrow for wheelchairs or walkers to pass through comfortably. Swing-clear hinges (which let a door swing completely out of the frame instead of into the hallway) can add a couple of usable inches without any demolition. Swing-clear door hinges are an inexpensive upgrade that makes a surprisingly big difference.

Lighting is the last piece of the entryway puzzle. Motion-sensor lights at the door and along hallways mean no one has to fumble for a switch while managing a cane or a set of keys. This is a simple plug-and-play option for renters and homeowners alike. Try these motion-sensor entry lights: option 1 / option 2.

Quick wins for your entryways:

  • Add a low-threshold or portable ramp at any step
  • Install swing-clear hinges on tight doorways
  • Add motion-activated lighting at entry points
  • Keep a clear, unobstructed path from the driveway or sidewalk to the door

A home that welcomes you in easily sets the tone for everything else — this is the room worth tackling first. For more accessibility design tips, and other interior design inspiration, subscribe to our email list - we'll send you a quarterly round-up of these blog posts directly to your inbox!
