4 Types of Greenery You Need In Your STR Property

When it comes to designing a top performing Airbnb or Boutique Hotel, the details make all the difference. One of the easiest and most effective ways to add to a space is by including greenery.

Whether you go for faux or real plants, the right greenery can create a more welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for your guests.

Check out the video below where we walk you through the four essential sizes of greenery every STR needs. Plus, keep reading for more tips on how to shop for and style faux plants in your space!

1. Tall Greenery:

Perfect for living areas, these tall trees (5 ft. and above, 6 ft. being ideal) create a sense of grandeur and spaciousness. Even in rooms with lower ceilings, they will open up the space, making it feel airy and inviting.

Tip: Be sure the tree stands taller than your seating, and don't forget to pair it with a stylish planter for added impact.

2. Mid-Sized Greenery (4 ft Trees):

Ideal for cozy corners like reading nooks or spaces with low seating areas. They also pair beautifully with hanging egg chairs or other low-profile furniture. This mid-size option adds warmth without overwhelming the space.

3. Tabletop Plants:

For dining tables, breakfast bars, or kitchen islands, choose plants around 1.5 to 2 feet tall. Opt for something that’s striking yet proportional to avoid overwhelming the area—oversized but not to the point where it looks like you’ve placed a tree in the center of the table.

4. Micro Plants:

These small plants (around 12 inches tall) are perfect for filling in gaps in your decor. Place them on bathroom ledges, bar carts, or other small surfaces to instantly elevate the space with a touch of greenery.

General Tips for Shopping for Fake Plants:

Fake plants often spark debate, but in the world of short-term rentals, they’re a fantastic option. Today’s artificial plants look surprisingly realistic and are low-maintenance, making them perfect for Airbnb or boutique hotel properties.

  • Prioritize Natural-Looking Textures: Look for plants with realistic textures, and steer clear of silk plants unless they have a waxy coating that mimics natural leaves.
  • Opt for Heftier Designs: Whether it’s a tall tree or a small tabletop plant, choose pieces that have a sturdy, full look. Thin, lightweight options can appear cheap and out of place.
  • Consider Your Location: Choose plants that make sense for your property’s location. Tropical plants may suit a beachside Airbnb, while cacti or succulents might fit a desert retreat better.
  • Stick to Natural Colors: Watch out for overly vibrant or fake-looking greens. Subtle, earthy tones tend to look more realistic.
  • Look for Shape Flexibility: We love plants with wire inside the stems—these allow you to fluff and shape the plant to fit and stage your space perfectly.
  • Check Reviews: Reviews can help you determine if a plant looks as good in person as it does online.
  • Accessorize the Planter: Enhance the realism by adding rocks, moss, or other natural elements to your planter.

Bonus Tip: Your planters are a great way to bring in different textures and materials into your design. Play around with ceramics, woven baskets, or metallics to complement your space. Most importantly, have fun with it!
