Before you dive into buying your neon centerpiece, here are a few essential things our team has learned over the years to ensure your investment is a win!
Key Considerations for Choosing the Right Neon Sign
Sign Size & Installation
Not all neon signs are created equal. When ordering a large custom neon sign, know that it might arrive in multiple pieces, even if advertised as “easy to hang.” This setup often requires hours of careful leveling, measuring, and adjustments.
We’ve experienced some signs that, despite claims, didn’t quite align. However, we've also discovered some real winners in the bunch. For example, we're continuously impressed with the custom signs ordered from Neon Grand.
Today, we use Neon Grand for virtually all of our neon sign needs. The storefront offers customizable neon signs of any size, with free shipping, and quick delivery. You can also create mock-ups of what your sign will look like on their website, which is especially helpful when creating mood boards, and designing your Airbnb. In addition to this, the signs are always quality, and they look amazing!!

Pro Tip: For a simpler installation, smaller signs (ideally one piece, max two) will be your best bet. Avoid the risk of uneven frames and letters, which can be frustrating to work with. Also, don’t leave the hanging to just any handyman—having someone skilled in detailed installations is worth it for a flawless result!
Bonus Tip: Get your signs cut to the letter to avoid extra bulk over special backdrops! If ordering from Neon Grand, this is an additional cost but SO worth it!

Remote Controls & Battery Prep
Most neon signs come with remote controls for easy on-and-off access, but they often require AAA batteries (typically two or three). As a finishing touch, consider adding a mounted plastic holder for the remote on the wall to keep it from getting misplaced—a convenient touch for guests. Remember to add batteries to your setup checklist and double-check for any missing parts when the sign arrives.
Hanging Hardware & Mounting Options
Hanging styles vary, with some signs coming equipped with cables and others needing wall mounts. Be sure to ask if hardware for hanging or wall-mounting is included before ordering, as you’ll need to plan your installation based on what’s provided. Additionally, make sure to choose a method that allows you to neatly hide the cord (most signs use a transparent plastic cord, which looks great if managed well).

Cord Placement and Wall Type
We’ve hung neon signs in all kinds of spaces—on brick walls, drywall, and even unconventional materials like faux flowers and boxwood. Each type requires different anchoring methods, so be prepared with suitable mounting hardware and, if needed, a cord cover that matches the room’s aesthetic. This extra touch keeps the installation clean and maintains that professional, polished look.

With these tips in mind, you’re ready to elevate your short-term rental with a neon sign that’s not just an accent but a memorable feature for your guests. Just imagine those guest photos with the glow of a neon sign—an easy win for your STR’s social media appeal!
