White Birch Cabin: Two Years Later

A Look Back at One of Our Favorite Projects

It's hard to believe it's already been two years since we completed the design of White Birch Cabin in Ellsworth, Michigan.

From the beginning, this project felt special. Nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, the newly built log cabin offered incredible views, a prime location, and endless potential. The owners of this property brought us in as they were building the property, enabling our team to be involved in the design decisions from the start, including flooring, fixtures and the floor plan. Our goal was to create a space that felt both elevated and approachable. Somewhere guests could gather, unwind, and make lasting memories while experiencing the natural beauty of Northern Michigan.

Two years later, White Birch Cabin continues to thrive.

What makes this story particularly meaningful isn't just the design itself. It's the way the owners have continued investing in the property, improving the guest experience, and adapting to what travelers are looking for. The result is a property that remains a Guest Favorite on Airbnb with nothing but 5-star reviews, continuing to outperform expectations.

Project Overview

White Birch Cabin is a waterfront retreat that accommodates up to ten guests. Located between Charlevoix and Elk Rapids and just minutes from Torch Lake, the property offers direct access to Lake Michigan along with a thoughtful mix of luxury amenities and family-friendly features.

The owners approached this project with a clear vision: create a vacation home that feels luxurious without losing the warmth and comfort people expect from a Northern Michigan cabin.

As designers, our role was to bring that vision to life through intentional space planning, furnishings, finishes, and styling that complemented both the architecture of the home and the stunning waterfront setting.

Designing for the Experience

When designing a short-term rental, it's easy to focus solely on aesthetics. The strongest-performing properties, however, go beyond looking beautiful.

They create experiences.

For White Birch Cabin, every design decision was made with the guest experience in mind. We wanted guests to immediately feel connected to the environment around them while still enjoying the comforts of a luxury getaway.

Natural textures, layered materials, cozy gathering spaces, and carefully selected furnishings helped create a balance between upscale and inviting. Large windows and open living spaces allowed the Lake Michigan views to become part of the design itself.

The result was a home that felt authentic to its location while standing out in a competitive vacation rental market.

A Strong Launch and an Even Stronger Future

The property launched in 2024 and quickly gained traction with guests.

After launch, the owners wrote:

"We couldn't be happier with the exceptional work by Pink Wall Designs! The design of our Airbnb, White Birch Cabin, has been praised by every guest, with comments about the cozy and luxurious feel that perfectly complements the waterfront views. Thanks to the inviting atmosphere Pink Wall created, we've not only received glowing feedback but are also on track to exceed our revenue goals by over $30,000 this year. If you're looking for a design team that combines style with functionality, we highly recommend Pink Wall Designs."

Exceeding revenue goals by more than $30,000 in the first year is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but what stands out even more is what happened afterward.

Rather than treating the launch as the finish line, the owners continued looking for ways to improve the guest experience and strengthen their position in the market.

The Power of Strategic Updates

One of the biggest misconceptions in the short-term rental industry is that success comes from completing a renovation and then leaving everything unchanged for years.

The highest-performing properties are constantly evolving.

White Birch Cabin is a great example of this approach.

Since launch, the owners have continued investing in thoughtful improvements that align with their target audience and enhance the overall experience. One of the most impactful additions was a barrel sauna, a feature that perfectly complements both the cabin aesthetic and the growing demand for wellness-focused travel experiences.

The addition helped create another memorable amenity for guests while strengthening the property's unique positioning within the market.

The Results Two Years Later

The combination of thoughtful design, strategic updates, and exceptional hosting has helped White Birch Cabin maintain impressive momentum.

According to the owners, average daily rate increased by 29% year-over-year.

Just as importantly, the property has maintained its guest favorite status on Airbnb, landing in the top 1% of listings, and continuing to earn strong reviews from guests.

While design played an important role in establishing the property's identity from day one, ongoing success has come from a commitment to continuously improving the guest experience.

Lessons for Property Owners

White Birch Cabin offers several valuable lessons for anyone designing, renovating, or operating a vacation rental.

1. Design Creates the Foundation

A well-designed property helps create memorable guest experiences, stronger reviews, and a distinct identity in the marketplace.

2. Success Doesn't End at Launch

The best-performing properties continue evolving. Strategic upgrades can keep a property competitive and help attract new guests year after year.

3. Amenities Matter

Travelers are increasingly looking for experiences, not just accommodations. Thoughtful amenities that align with your property's location and target audience can significantly increase perceived value.

4. Great Hosting Protects Long-Term Performance

Beautiful design may attract bookings, but exceptional hosting is what sustains positive reviews, repeat guests, and long-term success.

Looking Back

White Birch Cabin remains one of our favorite projects because it demonstrates what's possible when thoughtful design meets dedicated ownership.

Two years later, the property continues to deliver memorable guest experiences, strong financial performance, and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps travelers coming back.

For us, that's what great hospitality design is all about.

It's not simply creating a beautiful space. It's creating a foundation for long-term success.
