No Closet? No Problem: Smart Airbnb Bedroom Storage Ideas
Share
If you’ve ever designed a short-term rental or boutique hotel, you’ve probably run into the Great Closet Debate. It comes up with almost every client: What do we do if there are no closets?
Do we add an armoire? A luggage rack? A bench? All of the above?
At Pink Wall Designs, we’ve had this conversation countless times—with varying outcomes. But our recent design of The George in Broken Bow might just be the ultimate winner.
Why Closets Aren’t Always the Best Use of Space
At the Boardwalk Hotel in San Diego, this was a huge point of debate. Some team members felt that removing closets would make guests feel like something was missing. Others argued that closet space is rarely used to its full potential, especially for short stays. Ultimately, the closets stayed and luggage racks were put in for functionality... Is it the cutest look? No. Does it work? Yes.

But in Broken Bow, our client made a bold move: they removed the closets altogether to make the bedrooms feel more spacious—and honestly, it was a game-changer.
In an Airbnb or boutique hotel setting, most guests aren’t unpacking a full wardrobe. They’re staying for a weekend or a few nights, and they’re more interested in a great night's sleep and a beautiful space than in hanging up ten outfits.
Our Favorite Alternative: Sleek Hanging Bars + Thoughtful Accessories

Instead of traditional closets, we installed sleek wall-mounted bars with a few high-quality hangers—the kind you’d expect to find in a boutique hotel. They’re minimal, modern, and incredibly space-efficient.
Pro Tip: Ensure you have matching hangers in your rooms! Though it may be tempting to gather odds and ends and throw them in the room, this is a small detail that really stands out when not done right. We love these crisp white hangers, contrasting beautifully against the dark walls.
We paired these wall-mounted bars with benches and consoles where possible (a must-have if space allows) so guests can rest their bags, sit while putting on shoes, or just have a spot to place things.
No bulky furniture. No wasted space. And the rooms felt open, functional, and intentional.

Do You Need a Luggage Rack?
Honestly? Not always.
Luggage racks can be useful, but they can also feel like an afterthought if they don’t match the room’s aesthetic or if they’re just tossed in the corner. In many of our designs, a bench or a low console does the job just as well—while adding more style and function.
If you do opt for a luggage rack, we recommend one that’s actually stylish—something wood or leather, not the cheap foldable hotel versions.

The Takeaway
Closets are not a must in short-term rentals. In fact, removing them can create more inviting, spacious rooms that still offer everything a guest needs—just in a sleeker, more curated way.
