The Secret to Combining Wall & Ceiling Coverings Like a Pro

The Secret to Combining Wall & Ceiling Coverings Like a Pro

When designing a bold, high-impact space, especially for a short-term rental, getting the walls and ceiling to feel cohesive can be one of the trickiest parts of the process. Play it too safe and the room can fall flat. Go bold without a plan and the elements can start competing instead of complementing each other.

Our rule of thumb for combining wall and ceiling coverings is simple:

If you’ve chosen a colored wallpaper, you can absolutely do a colored ceiling as well, just in a different saturation.

How to Pair Wallpaper and a Painted Ceiling Without Clashing

Rather than trying to match the ceiling color exactly to a wallpaper tone, we recommend you pull a color from the wallpaper and adjust its depth or saturation so the two elements work together naturally.

In our YouTube transformation of Shelby Sapp’s brand new home office in Miami, FL, we leaned fully into this approach. We selected a bold pink leopard wallpaper for the feature wall and paired it with Benjamin Moore’s Genuine Pink on the ceiling.

Here’s why this pairing works:

  • The wallpaper includes a lighter pink tone
  • The ceiling color is a deeper, rosier version within the same color family
  • The difference in saturation creates contrast without visual conflict

The result is a space that feels layered, intentional, and visually dynamic without overwhelming the room. Your eye moves naturally through the space, which is exactly what you want in both hospitality design and content-forward rooms like offices, studios, and short-term rentals.

Here's Another Example Of This:

Though not on the ceiling, in The Rosé House, we used this rule to combine the wallpapered feature wall and paint in the rest of the room:

A Softer Alternative Using Paint Alone

If wallpaper is not part of your plan, you can still achieve a custom, elevated look using paint only.

Another hack we love is painting the ceiling the same color as the walls, but at 25 percent strength. This creates a subtle tonal shift that:

  • Adds depth and polish
  • Feels more custom than a standard white ceiling
  • Mimics the cohesion of color drenching without the full commitment

Did you know?

Your paint supplier can adjust the strength of any paint color by adding white. The lower the percentage, the more white is added, resulting in a softer, lighter version of the original shade.

Choosing the Right Level of Boldness

Wallpaper paired with a colored ceiling and full color drenching both create bold, memorable environments. This is the level of impact we often strive for in hospitality and short-term rental design. These approaches help spaces stand out, photograph beautifully, and leave a lasting impression on guests.

Reducing paint strength, on the other hand, may be better suited for:

  • Personal home design
  • More toned-down rentals
  • Spaces where a softer, longer-term aesthetic is preferred

Both strategies are effective. The key is choosing the approach that aligns with your space, your audience, and the experience you want to create.
