Walls that WOW: Elevating Your Short-Term Rental with Feature Walls

In the short term rental market, and especially with rentals in large tourism hotspots, finding ways for your property to stand out from the rest is crucial!

Creating moments in your short term rentals will be the difference on whether or not your property is in the top 1% of its market. Your guests are already booking with you to have fun and make memories, so why not go above and beyond to create these memories in your property? Become their partner and help make magic by creating unique spaces and feature walls that impress!

What is a feature wall?

A feature wall is a wall within a room that is accentuated or emphasized to create a focal point. Feature walls can be achieved through various means such as paint, wallpaper, textured finishes, murals, and interactive features by incorporating different materials like wood panels, stone cladding, or even fake flowers and boxwood!

We are also loving the trend of LED lights on feature walls, which add an extra dimension to the design, and create a cool ambiance in the room.

Why should I create a feature wall in my STR?

The purpose of a feature wall can vary, from adding colour and pattern to enhancing the architectural elements of the space. Feature walls can let your guests in on a particular room's theme, as well the general theme of your short-term rental property, or, they can simply exist to add visual interest to a standard space.

Feature walls are a popular technique used by interior designers to create depth and character in a room while also allowing for creative expression. In addition to this, feature walls can connect or separate spaces within your property, adding to the flow of the space. Short-term rentals often have little time to make an impression on guests. Feature walls will help counter this, and provide your guests with a distinctive image that they’ll remember. This can also serve you when guests are booking your property, when feature walls are used as a hero photo on your listing, drawing guests in!

BONUS! In today’s social media driven world, after booking, these spaces will often encourage guests to pull out their phones and post! This can be an invaluable tool for marketing of your STR property.

Looking to create a feature wall with a limited budget? No problem!

Depending on the scale of your project, supplies for feature walls and the labor that goes into setting them up can add up quickly. Luckily, there are plenty of options for creating visual moments with paint! All you need to implement is a pencil to sketch out your design, some painters tape, a steady hand, or maybe a projector if you want to get really creative. ;)

If you’re not looking for a challenge, try something simple like a geometric pattern! Or, search for local muralists in your area for some help– there are tons of options!

Bonus– Feature walls can also help you distract from awkward room plans! For example: In the second picture above, the window is off-centre, but this was the best wall to place the bed. Did you notice right away?

Probably not– The diamond shape in the corner takes focus away from the off-centred window!
